We asked the top AIs for the best business in town: what we found reveals everything
The test every business owner should run before anything else.

In short
When we asked ChatGPT, Gemini, and other AIs to recommend local businesses, the pattern was unmistakable: businesses that appeared had complete, consistent information across multiple online sources. Those that didn't appear simply didn't exist for the AI, regardless of how long they had been operating.
The test we ran
The question was simple: what is the best preschool in the city? We asked the same question to ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, varying the city and the time of day. The pattern was consistent: AIs do not recommend whoever has the most years in business or the best word of mouth in the neighborhood. They recommend whoever has structured, consistent, and verifiable information across multiple digital sources. A preschool with 20 years of history and zero organized digital presence did not appear in any response.
A small preschool with a well-completed profile and genuine reviews appeared before larger chains that had contradictory information scattered across the internet.
What separates those who appear from those who don't
The businesses cited by the AIs had three things in common: identical name, address, and phone number everywhere they appeared online; recent and responded-to reviews; and a clear description of what they do, for whom, and where. It was not a matter of size or budget. A small preschool with a well-completed profile and genuine reviews appeared before larger chains that had contradictory information scattered across the internet. See why inconsistent information confuses the AI.
Why the AI works this way
Generative AIs do not browse the internet in real time for every query. They were trained on large volumes of data and, when recommending, look for entities they recognize with confidence: businesses that appear consistently in directories, reviews, websites, and external mentions. According to Forbes, more than 77% of consumers already use some form of AI tool in their daily lives, and that number grows every quarter. When someone asks for a preschool near home, the AI responds with whoever it recognizes as a trustworthy entity, not whoever has the most expensive ad.

If you have never tested what ChatGPT, Gemini, and the leading AIs say when someone asks for your type of business in your city, that is the first step. The result will show you exactly where you are invisible. Understand how the AI recognizes (or ignores) your business as an entity.
Our take
We ran this test many times and the result always surprises us: small, well-structured businesses appear before large brands with messy digital presences. That is a real opportunity for anyone willing to organize their business information now. Appearing in AI responses should not be a privilege reserved for those with a marketing agency budget. It is a matter of structure, and any business can have structure.
Frequently asked questions
How do I test whether my business appears in AI responses?
Open ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity and ask: 'What is the best [your sector] in [your city]?' or 'Recommend a [your sector] near [neighborhood]'. If your business does not appear, the AI is not recognizing you as a trustworthy option.
Why doesn't my business appear even though I have been around for years?
Years in business is not data the AI can easily verify. What it verifies is consistency of online information: identical name, address, and phone number across multiple sources, recent reviews, and a clear description of what you do.
Do I need to pay for ads to appear in AI responses?
No. Generative AIs do not work like paid search engines. They recommend based on trust and data consistency, not advertising spend. Organizing your digital presence is the path, not the ad.
