AI is up to 30 times harder to crack than Google, 2026 report reveals

In short

A 2026 study of nearly 350,000 local businesses found that showing up in an AI like ChatGPT is up to 30 times harder than ranking well on Google. While 35.9% of businesses show up in Google's top 3, only 1.2% are recommended by ChatGPT. AI's bar is far more selective, and most businesses simply don't clear it.

The real size of the gap

The study, conducted by SOCi and called the Local Visibility Index 2026, analyzed nearly 350,000 locations from more than 2,700 multi-location brands. The result: only 1.2% of businesses were recommended by ChatGPT, 11% by Gemini and 7.4% by Perplexity. On Google, the same research found businesses in the local top 3 in 35.9% of cases.

Less than half of the brands best positioned in traditional search also show up among those most recommended by AI.

Why AI's bar is so much higher

Less than half of the brands best positioned in traditional search also show up among those most recommended by AI. That happens because it cross-checks several signals before deciding who to trust, including how consistent the information is everywhere the business appears. A business can rank well on Google and still be practically invisible to AI.

What this means if you're not a big chain

If even big brands with marketing teams struggle, small businesses might assume they don't stand a chance. It's actually the opposite: since the bar is so much more selective, whoever gets organized early, with accurate information, answered reviews and a complete profile, gets ahead of competitors who don't even know this race exists. GEO and AEO stop being optional and become what separates who shows up from who doesn't.

Frequently asked questions

Is this report reliable?

Yes, it's a real study by SOCi, published in 2026 and covered by Search Engine Land, one of the most respected outlets in the SEO and digital marketing industry. The sample is large, nearly 350,000 locations from more than 2,700 multi-location brands, which gives statistical weight to the numbers presented.

Does this mean my business will never show up in an AI?

No, it means the bar is higher, not impossible. The report shows exactly what separates who shows up from who doesn't: consistent information, real reviews and a complete profile everywhere the business exists online. It's not luck, it's organization, and you can do it even as a small business.

What do I do with this information now?

The first step is finding out where you stand today: with a free MerbIQ scan, in 60 seconds you'll see whether ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity already know your business and what they say about it. From there, it becomes clear what needs fixing first.

Our take

This kind of data tends to scare small business owners, as if a high bar meant only big companies can play this game. We think the opposite: since most companies, including big ones, haven't organized for AI yet, whoever starts now has a real window to get ahead. It's not about having the biggest budget, it's about having the right information before everyone else.
